Governance: Possibilities and Pitfalls. Center for Global Development. Center for Global Development hosted
Measuring Governance: Possibilities and Pitfalls with Daniel Kaufmann,
Director of Global Programs at World Bank Institute and Aart Kraay, Lead
Economist with Development Research Group at World Bank. Kaufmann and Kraay
presented the latest update of the Worldwide Governance Indicators (produced
by Kaufmann and Kraay, with Massimo Mastruzzi) covering over 200 countries
for the past decade. Following the presentation, Steve Radelet moderated a
conversation with the panelists--including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Former
Minister of Finance, Nigeria and Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Brookings
Institution, and Marianne Camerer, Co-founder and International Director,
Global Integrity--exploring the strengths and weaknesses of alternative
approaches to measuring governance, as interest in governance by donors and

Transforming a Congolese Village - A Grassroots Success Story.
Please join SID-Washington’s Africa
Roundtable for a presentation by Mbuyu Wa Mbuyu (Puma), President and
Co-Founder, Able & Willing International Education Foundation (A WIEF);
Jim Carpenter, Treasurer, A WIEF, Retired Bureau of Labor Statistics;
and Ameena Shrestha, Student Intern, A WIEF. Presenters will share A
WIEF’s work in establishing a comprehensive education institute in a
Congolese village. The Democratic Republic of the Congo maintains the
second-lowest per capita growth rate (-5.0%) in the world. In 1995,
Mbuyu Wa Mbuyu, a Congolese native, alongside an ex-Peace Corps
volunteer, constructed a school with personal funds in a village
without wells, latrines or electricity. Every year since then, Mbuyu
returns to the village to organize additional school construction work
and initiate various village development projects.
