Speaker: Alia Elmahdi, Professor of Economics,
University of Cairo. Dr. Elmahdi, a noted Egyptian scholar and
researcher, is the principal author of a forthcoming report on labor
market conditions in Egypt. Her work documents the rapid and
destabilizing growth of informal jobs that are rapidly crowding out
more traditional work in key areas of the economy. Dr. Elmahdi,
whose research will be published later this year by the Global
Policy Network as part of a five-nation study, will discuss her
findings and their economic and political import. Discussant:
Marsha Pripstein Posusney, associate professor of political science
at Bryant College and adjunct professor of international relations
at Brown University. She is author of Women and Globalization in the
Arab Middle East (2004) and of Labor and the State in Egypt:
