August 25 – September 26. Pay-What-You-Can-Preview. August 24 at 7:30pm

Venus. By Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks. Olney Theatre Center for the Arts. 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD 20832. 301.924.3400. Lured by hucksters from her South African home, 20-year old Saartje Baartman embarks on an exhibition tour through London. The exhibition? Herself. With the promise of riches dancing in her eyes, Baartman becomes the "Venus Hottentot," a freak in a circus sideshow. Profound and deeply moving, Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks' searing look at exploitation is surprisingly funny with the style and wit of a classic vaudeville show.

Africa: How Is the Pain? (Afriques: Comment ça va avec la douleur?). National Gallery of Art, East Building Auditorium, 4th St. & Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC. (202) 842-6799. Raymond Depardon has a singular ability to convey the character of a place in time, as in Afriques: Comment ça va avec la douleur?, a compendium of footage recorded over several years that includes scenes of everyday life, work, ritual, and catastrophe. While the camera records breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, starting with South Africa and moving to Rwanda, Angola, Somalia, Mogadishu, Ethiopia, the Sudan, and Egypt, the film's commentary moves from personal reminiscence to hard facts and figures about the troubles looming over the African continent (Raymond Depardon, 1996, 165 minutes).
