Faces of Africa - National Geographic. Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher have spent three decades following a dream to record the ancient cultures of the 53 countries of Africa. This quest has taken them to some of the most remote parts of the continent, where they have gained access to sacred ceremonies and traditions little known to the outside world. According to the Wall Street Journal, "these two Western women have gone further and deeper into tribal Africa that any photographers have gone before." For their new National Geographic book, Faces of Africa, they look back at this work, concentrating on portraits "not…in the classic sense of the word, but rather in the most poetic sense of nuance, gesture…and signs suggesting the unique stamp of an individual's presence in a time and place."
